Gathered Earth

Gathered Earth reimagines the traditional fabric quilt through the medium of clay, exploring its deep historical, cultural, and social significance across diverse communities. Drawing on my ceramic practice, the project reflects on collective processes of making, storytelling, and human connection.

At its heart, Gathered Earth centres on community and shared creative spaces. Through workshops, interviews, and conversations with various groups across London, I have gathered personal stories and reflections on the meaning and impact of community art spaces. These insights form the foundation of the work, which translates the quilt’s familiar form into clay to evoke dialogue and curiosity.

Quilts have long served as tools for storytelling, solidarity, and social change—qualities I aim to echo by embedding voices and experiences directly into the ceramic surface. For example, the piece’s border features quotes and observations collected from participants, symbolising the collective narrative woven through the artwork.

Gathered Earth invites viewers to reflect on the individuals and shared histories behind the piece, offering a tactile and visual space to consider belonging, community, and the power of collaborative creation.
